An Attack on Science Is an Attack on Ukraine’s Future
On 28 September 2026, a Russian drone struck the building of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in Kyiv. As a result of the attack, scientists and Academy staff members were killed, and others were injured. The building sustained severe damage and was engulfed in a large-scale fire. For us, this news is particularly painful. The National Academy of Sciences is not merely a building. It is people, scientific schools, archives, laboratories, decades of research, and accumulated knowledge. Russian aggression is aimed not only at the physical destruction of Ukraine’s infrastructure. It also targets cultural heritage, scientific institutions, and the people who create, preserve, and advance knowledge. The destruction of scientific infrastructure and the loss of scientists mean the loss of a part of Ukraine’s intellectual potential, a potential that is essential for the country’s future recovery and development. The Czech-Ukrainian Scientific Society expresses its sincere condolences to the families of those who lost their lives, to their colleagues, and to the entire Ukrainian scientific community. We stand in solidarity with Ukrainian scientists who continue their work and safeguard Ukrainian science despite the ongoing war.
