“Shchedryk” in Prague.
On December 21, we launched the first excursion of our CZ-UA Walks series: Shchedryk in Prague. Christmas and Other Stories of Oleksandr Koshyts. The event was guided by Volodymyr Pivtorak, a researcher at the Oriental Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences.
Over 100 years ago, a Ukrainian diplomatic mission visited Czechoslovakia, led by Symon Petliura. This mission aimed to introduce Ukraine to Europe through its culture, with music playing a central role.
On May 11, 1919, Mykola Leontovych’s Shchedryk premiered at the Prague National Theatre. The Ukrainian Republican Chapel, under Oleksandr Koshyts, performed across Prague, leaving a profound impact on both critics and audiences.
During the walk, the first postcard of the ‘Ukrainians in Prague’ series was introduced. The next walk, starting at the Taras Shevchenko Monument in Prague, will take place on January 11 at 11:00 AM.
This event was supported by a grant from UNHCR. For more details, contact us at ukrainianscientists.incz@gmail.com.
