Post-doctoral researcher position at the Helsinki Accelerator Laboratory, Department of Physics, University of Helsinki, Finland

We seek a junior or senior post-doctoral researcher to perform research on fundamental aspects of vapor-based film growth. Experience with thin-film synthesis using physical vapor deposition (e.g., magnetron sputtering and evaporation) and/or scanning probe microscopy (e.g., STM) methods, as well as hand-on mentality are required.  The project will offer to the researcher the possibility to expand her/his area of expertise toward in situ and real-time monitoring methods, including spectroscopic ellipsometry and wafer curvature. The position is available for 12 months and extension for 12-24 months it is likely to be possible (depending on future calls for hosting Ukrainian researchers from the Research Council of Finland). The starting date is flexible upon agreement.

Short project description

Thin noble-metal films that serve as multifunctional contacts on oxides, semiconductors, and van-der-Waals materials are a key component in a wide array of heterostructure devices in the areas of nanoelectronics, biosensing, catalysis, energy saving, and energy conversion These films are typically synthesized via condensation from the vapor phase and the resulting device performance crucially depends on film morphology: in some cases, a flat two-dimensional (2D) layer that wets the underlying substrate in a complete and uniform function is essential, while in other cases device functionality requires that the deposited layer self-assembles in three-dimensional (3D) nanostructures with well-defined sizes and shapes. Achieving such morphology control can be challenging, as noble-metal atoms typically exhibit a weak interaction (i.e., bond strength) with oxide/semiconductor/van-der-Waals substrates, which drives uncontrolled formation of 3D nanoscale islands. The goal of the proposed project is to gain a (currently non-existing) holistic atomic-scale understanding of the dynamic processes that govern morphological evolution of thin noble-metal (silver) films synthesized by vapor condensation on weakly-interacting substrates (zinc oxide, silicon, single-layer graphene, and molybdenum disulfide). This understanding will provide the scientific foundation towards knowledge-based design of bespoke device-relevant heterostructures. The project will be hosted by the Helsinki Accelerator Laboratory (HAL); a world-class research environment in experimental and computational materials science at the University of Helsinki (UH). HAL offers access to a unique combination film synthesis, real-time growth monitoring, in situ surface imaging, and ex situ characterization capabilities, which will be leveraged in a single experimental platform for executing the project

Two Ph.D. positions in Biophysics

The Ph.D. projects will be carried out in the Spectroscopy group of the Department of Physics (www.polivkalab.cz). The group focuses on application of femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy to study ultrafast processes in various systems. The laboratory has long-standing tradition in studies of excited state dynamics of carotenoids and energy and/or electron transfer in photosynthetic systems. The core equipment in the lab is a femtosecond laser system equipped with two independent parametric amplifiers and two separate detection systems. In addition to the ultrafast spectroscopic equipment, standard spectroscopic tools and a fully equipped biochemical laboratory are also available. A new laser system will be installed during the project.
Two Ph.D. positions, starting in 2024, are available: The Ph.D. projects will focus on applications of ultrafast spectroscopy to studies of non-photochemical quenching and light-harvesting in photosynthesis. The students will work in a group consisting of physicists, chemists and biologists and their main task will be to learn various ultrafast spectroscopy methods and apply them to studies of excited-state dynamics of molecules and pigment-protein complexes.
Application deadline: January 31, 2024
